External Hard Drive went 'Unallocated' out of the blue.

It's been a few weeks since I last had my 1TB Verbatim External Hard Drive turned on, so I turned it on today (no specific reason.)
The first issue was the drive not showing up in 'My Computer' (Windows 7), so I went to 'Disk Management' which immediately told me to give the drive a 'Partition Style' (if I remember correctly), and without thinking twice I simply clicked Enter and it got a 'Master Boot Record', I have no idea what the other option was.
Now the drive is listed as 'Unallocated' and the only option I have when right-clicking it is 'New Simple Volume...' which I have no idea what is.
To make a question short, I need this Hard Drive to work again without having to format it, as I have very important files on it.
I hope some of you can help me, I really dont wanna lose my data.
