WD hard drive makes connection noise but doesnt show up

My 1tb western digital hard drive has decided to stop working, I normally back up all of my files twice on seperate hard drives but have just come back from a month travelling and my pictures were, unfortunately, all on this one. There is around 500gig on it but the photos are all im bothered about.
Iv taken it to a computer shop who checked to see whether it was a fault with the casing, it wasn't. They say the fault is with the drive and have put me in contact with a data recovery company. The data recovery is being quoted at upwards of 100 and I cant afford it. I was wondering whether there is anything that can be tried at home. When I connect the hard drive the computer makes a connection noise and recognises that a hard drive has been attached, I can click to safely remove it, but when I look for the drive in my computer (where it usually appears) it is missing. Im not sure where else to look.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely Laura x
