Windows is Checking the consitency of my external hard drive

I have a external Wd MY book 500g hard drive F is the drive name when my pc restarts and boots it says windows is checking the consistency of F: Fat 32 it says a lot of files are unreadable. and suppsedly deletes them but my pc doesn't and i have to hold power for 10 sec and restart I recently moved some pictures and word documents to F to free up my C hard drive it ran fine for 3wks or so but all the sudden it does this now i haven't done anything with moving files onto or off except for Norton 360 backups once a month. why is this happening? Is it malware? a problem with F windows or what? I really need some help on this! here is my spec

Windows Vista home premium with all updates
Westren Digital MY Book 500g hard drive with 376 g of space left F drive
Norton 360 2010 4.0 malwarebytes free version as well as an expired mcafee 2007 antivirus that came with pc
