External Hard Drive wont open and freezes up computer

I have an I/O Magic 250 GB external hard drive which when plugged into a computer causes the computer to freeze up. It started when I was adding and removing files to the hard drive and I am now unable to access any of the data on the drive or even turn it on while attached to a computer.

Is there any way to save the file son the drive?

Is there any way to reformat or fix the drive so that it can still be used with or without the files stored on it?

Hope that works and can I ask where the back up copies are?
