External Hard Drive Not Reading

I have a Seagate external hard drive that has a number of saved documents, music, photos, etc. I have had it for a couple of years now and was planning on saving all the documents to another form of storage to have a second copy.

When I plug in this external hard drive and try to click it open in "My Computer", a box comes up and says "This Disk Needs to be Formatted". I don't want to format (clear) this drive to open it since there are files on it I need.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Thank you, I appreciate it!

I have same problem. My hard drive is not getting detected and a formatting window is popping up.
Please help...

Explore the problem

Usually when my USBs come up with the same error, I Explore my folders (where the folders are listed in heirachy on the left side of the window). So instead of double clicking your folders, just click on the file path on the left panel. I used to use this method on Windows XP, not sure if it applies to windows 7. You should be able to access your data without formatting
