External hdd recognized only as a 'Mass Storage Device'

I purchased a HITACHI Deskstar 500GB E7K500 HDS725050KLA360 SATA hard drive, and an Antec MX-1 external case. I put the drive inside the external case, and when I plug it into the pc (tried 3 different pcs - win xp, xp pro, various system specs..) it installs and everything, but it only comes up as a mass storage device in device manager. The drive does not show up in My Computer.
Is the drive defective? Is the case defective? Is it something wrong with my computer?
Any help would be a huge!!!

I called Hitachi Support, and he directed me to right-click My Computer, the click Manage. When I went into Disk Management, I just had to Intilize, then partition. For some reason, I thought it had to appear in My Computer first. Thanks for the reply, and it is working well!
