Graphics card for 8yr old HP pavilion a810n?

I have an 8yr old HP pavilion a810n. It has AMD Athlon 64 2.4G, 2G RAM, 1TB SATA HDD (7200rpm), 16x DVD ROM, DL DVD burner, and a new 500W pwr supply (original was 250W-died recently). It is running Windows7 32-bit. (yes, I did some upgrade that I could do over the years).
I just do internet surfing including simple video streaming, MS Office, and that kind of stuffs. No gaming, no big math work or simulation. Most bothering problem is that when I tried to use "Windows DVD Maker", it says the program cannot be started because "To use Windows DVD Maker, the video card on your computer must support DirectX 9 or higher and use Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) drivers" My system info says it has only "Standard VGA Graphics Adaptor". Also, some functions of the SW for my Sony camcorder (HDR-CX150) does not work properly. Using that SW, converting one DVD-full (4.7G) avi file to DVD and burning takes at least couple of hours.
I assume that these issues could be solved or alleviated by installing a graphics card. Is that correct? If so, any recommendation?

Having a better card *may* get beyond the video constraints but the remaining DX9 issue won't be immediately solved that way. Win7 supports better and it wants better if the s/w you use is Win7 ready, etc., then the PC h/w becomes a bottleneck and you're at a point where improvements if they pay off may not for long. I suspect if this 8yr. old PC on-board video port is being used then adding a video card could be possible. What's left to do is verify you actually have a video slot, which maybe AGP based, if so then the old video card style is still a bottleneck but no telling as you drag your PC forward into operation with new video card. If you can install a new video card, this maybe the last improvement until you get a newer PC.

According to the above HP specs, it has a AGP slot, so install or replace it with a better video card. Being older style you'll need to shop probably on eBay or Craigslist for a source if not locally. You're 500W PSU should provide the added/needed video power connections as well.

Thank you, Willy. Yes I know that this must be the last hurrah for this PC. I'm pushing it. I'll try a AGP based card and see what it does. I know I'm pushing it. blush

The square peg is w7.
The round hole is that old machine.

There is "no" driver support to couple w7 to that machine.
That means your running on w7 generic drivers.......not good.

Trying to run w7 on 2GB of ram is possible but it might be an exercise in "how skinny can you make it"

Since you don't game.
I see entry level machines from the local merchants in the 350/400 buck range that would be 5x what you have.

I went through the w98>w7 new machine upgrade......kicking and screaming.....but I survived.

Thank you, bob b. Yes I know I'm pushing it. I found a $50 AGP graphics card and try it. After that, it will be a new computer, I guess. blush
