A couple of quick questions

I am going to buy a new video card for my son's computer
and update the O.S. Now don't confuse the basics I am going to spell out for intelligence

The computer has in it now

AMD Phenom II x4 955 Processor
Western Digital WD1502FAEX HDD
4gb memory
700 watt 3 rail power supply 12, 24 & 36 amp
geforce 9800 video

I want to put a new video card in his computer
I can get either of these

GTS 250 OC
GTS 450

which would be better?

Also:

windows 7 or windows 8??

Any thoughts you could offer would be appreciated

250 vs 450......the 250 wins.

W7 vs W8.......W7 wins.

The 9800 came in different flavors.....gt/gx2/gtx.
Care to share which you have?
You might be into an exercise of doing not much.

The 9800 > 250 is a small jump in perf.
The 9800 > 250 is a big jump in power....watts.

Change the mix.
9800 > Hd 7770
A little more perf than the 250 but much less power.

Just guessing that your playing with an old machine.
Make sure you have driver support before jumping to a new OS.

While the 8800 and 9800 were king a few years ago, today I find them to be a source of trouble as they age.

The consensus on video cards is that the HD 7770 is better.

I have looked at the comparison on passmark

It could be time for change.

Is there any flavor of the HD 7770 that would be better than others?

it's a pci express 3.0 card

I am sure I only have 2.0

will this card work in my computer??

I'm sure there are some machines that will get fussy about this 2.0/2.1/3.0 stuff but in general......fit it in the slot.....it works.

You've changed horses.
That new horse is a 200w unit.

With your multi-rail psu it might be a problem.

You best get out paper and pencil and figure out what rails are going to connect to what.

You don't want to be running a rail much over 70%.

flip flop again

I flip flopped again. I just cuold not bring myself to buying a radeon card

I got a great deal on a gtx 560.

I already had the 2x6 pin power adapters it required running directly from the power supply.

Hopefully it works out ok
