ASUS A7V8X-X computer won't start

Hi There

I seen a similair post to this in another thread but is quite old. I have a pc with Asus A7v8x-x board and and athlon processor in it. It was working and i have my OS installed.
I stored it away for a week and now it wont start. Nothing comes on screen,

The Board led comes on the PS fan and cpu fan come on as soon as i plug it in. I have no function to the on switch on the front.

When i connected the IDE cable to the cdrom i get the red HD light on but nothing for the hard drive itself. The cdrom drawer will open when powered.The Harddrive will not spin at all when the IDE cable is plugged in but will spin when only power cable is there.

I have taken out cmos battery, reset bios with jumper,

removed and reseated ram, also tried to boot without ram.
I tried a different powersupply. There is nothing only an agp card installed. I also took off the cpu fan and removed the procoessor and booted. The PS fan turned and MB led came one.

I checked power and i have 12v and 5v.

Is this a MB failure or CPU failure.

*IF* you tried to power-ON the PC with only the cpu installed and everything else, but no cpu fan, you could have well fried the cpu. It doesn't take long for an AMD cpu to quit. Even, if you didn't do this, you have an old PC and trying to make it work. I see you did this and that and covered the bases, so I would toss it. Take the HD out and if data is what you want, get an USB ext. case and mount HD for data retrieval.

Take it out of the case and place on cardboard on table. test that way with due care. Replace CMOS battery and use yet another video card. If you can, test components elsewhere and then re-use OK tested items to build and only build a minimum system. The time and effort involved makes or breaks the value of the old PC.

Yeah I powered up without the cpu fan on at the very last stage. Its a diy build pc so i have no data loss at all. Maybe i will try another cpu of the same type. I bought that for 12euro on ebay and it was working. I had installed windows and software needed to run a machine.

When i put the cpu fan back on i got the same results and before. The only thing i didnt try was try with a pci video card instead of a agp. I used 2 of those and different ram in different slots.

the reason its a diy build is if i buy the same spec pc of a machine manufacter they charge we €1700. i put this togther for 100euro, which included case, MB, cpu and fan. Ram and video i had. But your right time is pushing on and i need to make a decision soon.

were notorious for leaking, bulging, doming capacitors.
