computer starts up at night when on sleep mode

when I shut the computer down at night on sleep mode it restarts again at 3.00 in the morning by its self.who do i stop this from happening

Could that be the time set for an automatic Windows update? Did you check that setting.
Why 'sleep' the machine? Why not turn it off or hibernate?

It appears as Kees stated, you have a "auto-maint. setting" at 3AM set. You can check your auto-setting at the control panel. Depending on your OS, it will be labeled as some system maint. during inactive time, usually the default is 3AM. It could be an update, defrag the HD, or whatever you instructed to do when idle and time.

The above link applies but may vary to access the maint. menu setting, within the OS so google for further info if needed, Alas, you gave no clue to your OS.
