Getting overheating message after ext hard drive mishap

I was backing up my PC to an external hard drive when a friend got tangled in the wire and knocked the drive onto the floor and bent the USB connector. Now the computer shuts down immediately or soon after starting showing a message that it is overheating. I doubt it is overheating as it is not on long enough. Any thoughts as to what is happening?
