I have an old Gateway 2000 G6-266 (pentium II - i think) computer and I want to harvest data from it. The desktop has 2 USB ports but the computer won't read the integral courier 2GB drive I attached - the computer needs the correct drives. There is no way of getting easy internet connection to download the correct drivers over the internet. I just wondered if anyone knew of any flash drives that are available on the market at the moment that would be easily read by the computer?

On such a system, you would have to download the drivers on another PC and install them from diskette (copy to it) or CD (burn to it) if there is no Internet available.
By the way, it's not dependent on the hardware, but on the OS. You didn't mention that. But let's assume for the moment you can find the right drivers for that OS.

Operating system is Windows 97.
There was a Windows 98.

And it's very rare to find drivers for such new drives today. To get around this I put the files on CDRW for that old machine.

I'm sure you meant win98 and if so the drivers MUST be available from the flash drive maker support website. Then use whatever method you have to transport that driver to the PC and load it. You have 2Gb flash drive, maybe a friend has a more friendly(drivers) flash drive if you can't use yours. the whole point you may get by or use your friends with drivers installed to do what you need to do.
Suggestion: You can remove the old PC hard drive and install in your new PC or install in ext. USB case/adapter setup to retrieve data that way.

I'm guessing not. Assuming this is Windows, (which one?), and it doesn't run, then you have two options.
Since it doesn't run you won't be able to install drivers.
So, either remove the drive, place it in some USB enclosure and connect that to another computer to copy out the files, or on another computer, download Ubuntu Live CD, burn that to a CD as an ISO, then over to this Gateway computer, boot from the CD and use Ubuntu's file manager to copy the files you need to some memory stick or other removable media.
