Boot Failure: System Halted

Hey, I'm trying to build a PC out of spare parts to sell. So I have this in it.

P4 2.26GHz
768MB DDR PC3200U
Radeon 7600 32MB Graphics
CD-RW
DVD-R
120G HDD

Did a fresh install of XP Pro on the disk, installation went fine. However, when I turn it on, it says "Boot Failure: System Halted". But when I turn it off, and then immediately turn it on, it boots up fine.
The BIOS sometimes does and sometimes doesn't recognize the HDD; I tried resetting them and changing out the battery, but no go. I ran a full chkdsk on the thing. No go.

Any help? Do I need to reinstall/repair windows, or is it a problem with the motherboard/BIOS?

Your hard disk might have some bad sector in Main drive, backup all data, delete all partitions and re-partition it for the new drives. I hope your problem will be solved.

Did you google BAD CAPS then inspect for that?

Also, if the power supply is old, it can do that. This is a CLASSIC issue with older machines. My advice is DO NOT FIX THEM. Let it be and get the last use from the machine while it works.

I'll 2nd Robert's post on the probable problem you're having. As for bad caps, understand any minor deviation from a good looking one is a clue, so look closely and YES, old stuff is like that.

FYI- I have a similar "working PC" with 80gb HD and wanted only $20 with Ubuntu installed, no takers. Also, you are selling the authentic XP OS disc along with it, right? -----Willy happy
