I have a dell xps 600 with windows XP service pack 3 and the dvd -cd writer will not write disks. The drive will play disks just not write them. Trouble shooting hardware says the disk is ok. I also have a cdrom drive that only plays disks.
The defective drive (IDE) was a Phillips 16x DVD+/-RW drive. The new drive is the same except it is made by LG and it came with no instructions. I know how to open the case and remove the old drive. What do I need to do to make this change?. Please step by step. (drivers, etc).

Drive install-retrofit

Just install the new drive, make sure you have cables hooked up, boot the system, windows should recognize the drive. Dependent upon what you wish to do you will likely have to install some aftermarket burning software.

Re installing the new drive.....Dell support as found on their website usually has very good info re removing and installing new hardware. Other than connecting the drive, the only thing you might need to change is the drive jumper. Normally for drives in Dell's ...you jumper them as Cable Select (CS).
