error code 4450

I have a dell xps 600 windows xp service pack 3 with a phillips internal 16x dvd rw -cd drive that will not burn a disc. I am using Roxio software for burnig. Windowa trouble shooting shows the device is working. It starts to work ,but then just returns an error has occured. Sometimes it shows error4450

Did you try a new DVDRW drive?

This error is incredible common. So is the cure. And so are the owners that don't want to replace the drive.
