Installed XP and Im stuck!!!! Someone PLEASE Help Me! :)

I got a desktop computer which had no operating system on it, so I installed the Windows XP cd that it came with and now IM STUCK! The computer refused to acknowledge my internet connection. I have checked and rechecked the connection and everything seems ok.

What am I doing wrong? What am I missing?

Also once I get the internet going, what do I do next??? lol
I know I need an antivirus, IE, Firefox, microsoft office, I think I remember something about Service Pak 3??

Clearly Im lost....some direction please!?

Verify and check

During the re-install of the OEM OS, you need to verify any drivers that maybe needed. Most OEM installs require other discs as well and/or a visit to thier respective support website for devices that require drivers. If you didn't do this or verify you maybe dealing with a non-complete true re-install which can cause issues later. Once done, you can proceed to other levels, etc., and hopefully be OK.

You provide NOTHING on the details of your system or install other than XP. Sorry, this is not enough, other than what I stated above, check it out.

Check the Device Manager

Click start>Right click "My Computer>click "Manage". In the Computer Management window, open "System Tools\Device Manager". Check the right pane for network adapters. If you do not see a network adapter, but see an unknown device (question mark icon), that could be your adapter but windows doesn't have a driver for it. From another computer, browse the manufacturer of your computer for the drivers associated with it (specifically the network addapter). Download and transfer the driver through removable media (burn it to a CD or use a USB memory stick) to your laptop. Install the driver. You should see an unknown device change status to a network adapter.

If the network adapter is a PCI card, it may not have been part of the original computer. Open the computer and look for the manufacturer make/model on the PCI card itself. From there, browse that manufacturer's website for the driver to install.

If you can't identify the hardware, the unknown hardware (question mark icon) can still help you. Open the properties and look at the details tab for a Vendor ID and Product ID (commonly VID & PID numbers like VID_0545&PID_8002). Enter that into a search engine and typically you can identify the manufacturer and model of your hardware. Now it's off the the mfg's website for the driver.

The easiest way is to go to your computer device manager(right click my computer, manage,device manager )check all those that are in yellow and note them. now go to your computer's official web site and download missing drivers based on your computer model, os and items you noted
