graphis card

i have a silent i cube/shuttle desktop pc running;
120 gig hard drive
1 gig of ram
pentium 4 3.2mhz processor
pioneer dvd rw
windows vista ultimate os

and the current graphics card i have installed is a agp (yeah i know its old!) ati radeon 9800 pro 128mb and wanted to know are there any better graphics card i can get to run on my system as ive had this one for a while and its starting to get noisy. not worried about what make but suggestions would be greatfull as i have no idea as what to look for, thanks in advance.

As far as I know graphics cards don't have any moving parts, so they can't make a noise. Or by noisy do you mean video interference?

If you do mean noise, as in sounds, then crack open the case and look at the fans. Remove all the dust that has built up. This might give the card a bit longer life until you make a decision on a replacement.

its the fan that is making the noise ive had a look at it and cant see why its doing it? its louder at start up of system then seems to quiet down a little after five mins or so, over the weekend i will spend some time cleaning out the area where the fan to see if it helps. but if i were to go and purchase a new card is there any suggestions to go better?

fan noise

some video cards do have moving parts because of fans installed on them. the fan spins on a bearing that can be dirty or just failing and creating the noise. the bios usually controls the fan speed kinda like a computer in a car. the noise can be varying because the fan is speeding up or slowing down at some points...like in a car. once the cpu gets to a certain temp, the fan can kick up or down depending on the conditions. best thing to do is to get some canned air and try blowing out the fan. just make sure you know which fan the noise is coming from.

just replace the cooler on the 9800, with something more silent, look at the Zalman VF-700 AlCu

I'm guessing the extra noise is the result of Windows Vista, here's my reasoning:

Vista has 3D acceleration on the desktop which pushes your 9800 for all its got, hence the fan runs faster to compensate for the extra heat generated by the 9800 working harder, hence, more noise

Honestly I don't know what would compel someone to put Vista on a computer that old, but hey, to each his own.
