Desktops forum: Poll: How many functional computers do you have at home?

We have three, one each for us and a spare case with motherboard,ram etc in the attic for the kids when they are older. All three are custom builds, and the kids one is cobbled together from bits we have upgraded from. Thing is, with technology going as fast as it is,they will say its obsolete and old fashioned and cann they have a laptop each instead? My husband will be in mourning for the good old days of chunky hardware, serial cables and cases which well earn the title of towers!

We have four.

Two DELL notebooks (Inspirons) and a DELL Dimension (RAID1) and a MEDION brand Multimedia PC. There's also a stack of devices on the network including a NAS. There's another 6 PCs on the same network (on a wireles bridge) at another premises and there's four printers and a MF printer as well.

All three are Dells. 1) XPS 700 2) Dimension 8300 3) Old XPS 233. I also own an XPS Laptop I use at work.

I have 1 laptop (HP) and three desktops two HPs which are six and seven years old and work fine and one Dell about four years. one HP had a harddrive which was replaced by HP on the off chance that it could go bad. They all work very well untill my children and grandchildren are over. They think computers are new to me. I started with paper tape and punch cards.

I bought it in 2003. It's a Dell Dimension 4550 with 112 gb hard drive. I've since added memory, and it's time for a tune up, but it hasn't given me any problems at all. I LOVE IT

I have three computers, two Dell desk tops and a Toshiba lap top. I also have an IPAQ which may or may not be an actual computer to some.

Dell 8100 -- My first Dell - for wife and daughter. E-mail, iTunes.
Dell 4500 -- My second Dell - for me. Gaming, video editing.
Sony PGC-4G1L (notebook) - Wife's work computer for VPN access
IBM/Lenovo T-60 - My work computer for VPN access

Dells run XP Home
Others run XP Pro
All work as advertised and have had NO problems. Use wired network except for Sony, which uses wireless for easy access around the house and is possibly our most easily accessed web browser computer due to small size, great screen and wireless.

I have 3 laptops, a Win95 Toshiba Libretto, A WInbook X2 Win2000Pro, and a Dell Inspirion XP. I also have 2 servers - Win 2000 Server, and one RedHat Linux 7.x server. The rest are Desktop mini towers with DOS, Win 98 or Win 2000 O/S which are used for program testing or data conversions from legacy competitive programs that I need to bring data into the mysql based program I have developed.

I also build mini-itx experimental computers for Windows or Linux O/S/

Two - both Dell - desktop is a 4600 Pentium, laptop (newest) is an Inspiron 9400 Dual Core - those are the FUNCTIONAL ones.
I have an old Gateway - top of the line ... about 15 years ago, and an older IBM X-frame that I cloned myself - back when I 'knew' what I was doing!
So .. there are 4, but only 2 that I would consider functional in today's environment.

I have four homebuilt desktop systems all connected and working at present, plus one Acer laptop. I have a few more homebuilts that either would be working if I plugged 'em in, or are in various states of getting built or rebuilt. Undoubtedly these are far more than I need, but I really enjoy building computers. I just do this for a hobby, eventually either sell or give them away. Right now I'm trying to resist buying more parts to build another one, and can feel myself weakening.

I have a HP desktop about 1 1/2 years old. My wife just bought me a Compaq Presario 577CL notebook for my birthday, and I have an old Compaq notebook that is at least 10 years old and has Win 95 on it. Anybody interested in buying it?

My home is a small network unto itself. I have one machine that is a print server/scanner unit for all to use. My daughter has a laptop and desktop on WIFI, my youngest son has a laptop on WIFi, I have one unit that has a CD burner and 7.1 sound system for audio work and transcribing tapes and vinyl to CD. I have another unit that is used for transcribing video from film, negative or composite video to DVD. Throw in one machine that is for games along with a PSP that's on WIFI and a PS3 on wireless. Included is a wired PS2 and a multimode video switch to connect the 50 inch big screen to any one of the units and what you have is a real nightmare when things go wtong. The router is an 8 channel WIFI with 8 channel wired ports. It seems that it never gets any rest as all family members work different shifts and schedules. I'm really thankful for WIFI as I hate pulling cable, I have to do enough of that for my job and dislike doing it at home. Each room is wired for CAT5, phone, video and audio, besides a home security and environmental controls. This was all wired when it was built which made it easier. One computer, and old IBM AT unit with a 48 channel serial port card to collect data from wall outlets, infra-red sensors, particulate sensors and ultrasonic for security is not on the network and isolated from the other units.

One is a Compacq (sp?) desktop that doesn't get a lot of use and my Dell Inspiron laptop which is in use about 8 - 12 hours a day.

We have 2 Macs. An I-Mac desktop and a MacBook lap top. Love them.

I have 2 desktops running xp (a dell and a compaq), 2 laptops running xp (again a dell and a compaq), one 10 year old dell XPS D233 desktop with 96MB of RAM, a 9GB HDD and a Pentium II 233MHz processor and a 12 year old toshiba Satellite Pro 400CDT with 40MB of RAM, 2 HDD (a 900MB and a 256MB) and a Pentium 75MHz processor with a 10.4" VGA screen and a battery life of approx. 5 minutes. I love that little toshiba laptop. I used to have a clone IBM PC (what is now 16 years old) running Win 3.1 and MS-DOS with 4MB of RAM, a 350MB HDD and a 13" XGA screen but the C: got currupt and it died with all of the games with. Commander Keen 1-6, duke nukem, King's quest, Space quest, Wolfenstien 3D, etc. So many memories.
