I have 98SE and i close everything down when running a defrag by stopping the anti-virus software, switching off screensaver and scheduled tasks. Then I click "Ctrl+Alt+delete" and clear the system tray of everything except explorer and the program you are using so that all that is left is the volume control and scheduled tasks icon .... also another tip ... before doing a defrag give all your HDDs a scan us the scandisk program and if doing a full scandisc ... you only need to scan system not data. If you need any help, don't hesitate ... I'm an IT repair and can work out most solutions ... so give us a shout if you need help any day ... don't mind helping if appreciated ...

I`m running Windows ME and I have the same problem.The most simple solution was to reboot my machine and have it restart in "SAFE MODE". I get to " SAFE MODE" by waiting for my DELL Logo to appear and then press the "F8" key several times. The computer then will change to a screen that asks you how you would like to restart. Pick "SAFE MODE" and enter. All your icons will come up as usual, except they will be larger than usual. Then, start your Disk Defragment and wait. It should complete without restarting 12 times because your computer only has necessary programs open. Once complete, restart your computer again and let it boot like it normally does. See if that works for you.

I have had this problem...turned out I was leaving other programs running while I was trying to defrag. Press Crtl Alt Del. and bring up your other programs before defraging...turn everything off except the essential ones...you should defrag just fine.
