DVD Writer not working

I have a computer on which my DVD writer is not working fully. It only reads CD's but does not write any. In same place I connected a CD writer. The same problem came up. It would just read but not write any CD's. CD's are ok, Both writers work properly on another computer.

When computer boots up this comes up on BIOS screen:

Primary Master: My Samsung Hard Disk Name
Primary Slave:None
Secondary Master: My Sony DVD Writer Name
Secondary Slave: None

Primary IDE Channel no 80 Conductor Cable Installed
Secondary IDE Channel no 80 Conductor Cable Installed

Prior to DVD Writer, a CD Writer was installed which was working properly till I shifted from one state to another. My computer also came with me to new place. When I started my computer after shifting for 1st time & put a CD to read in earlier CD writer it damaged my CD & each after it. So I bought a DVD writer.
I have also replaced the BUS cable but still same problem exists.
It seems problem is somewhere else. Please Help me out.

This sounds like the software is for the old CD writer.

Did you update the (unnamed) software to support the DVD writer?

Here's a common pitfall. The software was for some other make/model and was locked to said make/model. No update is available since it's a bundled version. Also, those PACKET WRITING SOFTWARES are notorious for wiping out when we take the CDRW to other machines. Hint? Don't use such.

Check your hardware setting for this device

Click on start, click on settings,click on control panel, click on system, click on hardware, click on device manager. This will take you to a screen list of all your hardware including your DVD, click on it and it should show you what Windows has it assigned as. This could be assigned as a dvdrom or cdrom or whatever but in order to work as as dvd writer it should be showing it as a dvdrw with the rw somewhere as this denotes it as having read write capabilities. If it does, then check the RMA as it may have to have an RMA address assigned to this drive in order for it to work. Sony drives all have some peculiar driver software that differs from most other driver manufacturers. If any additional help is needed, you may want to check Sony forums.
