Emachines system recover disk freezes

My emachines T6414 froze several weeks ago and I have tried unsuccessfully to revive it. I tried system restore and then moved on to try to use the system recovery disk. When I try to use it, it gives the message "Preparing emachines sytem recovery options" and a bar code on the bottom of the screen eventually becomes solid white. The screen then shows the message "powered by PC Angel System recovery" and then the screen freezes and nothing happens.

I have removed my hard drive, hooked it up to another emachines and successfully used the system recovery disk. I've also tried a different CD drive on the "broken" pc to see if the original CD drive was damaged and the system recovery disk still doesn't work. I don't know what to try next.

The machine was locking up before the restore and the restore locks up. So the cause of the lockup is likely still present. It may take a new motherboard, RAM, CPU or whatever hasn't been changed to fix it. The killer item is that any trip to a repair shop could cost more than a new machine!

Is there an easy way to tell which component is the problem (motherboard or processor?)

Not enough has been told so I can't guess which it could be. For example a common issue are failed or clogged heatsink and fans. I don't see any writing about the machine details as to age or yearly maintenance that would have me suggest this.

The desktop is not old - purchased by my teenage son in November of 05. When he turns it on the fan works and the PC powers up but the system recovery process always freezes at the exact same point.

See clogged heatsinks or failed hard disks. You can inspect for the dust and lint issue and if the CPU fan (not the ones you can see from the OUTSIDE) are working. Here's a CD that has hard disk test programs.
