computer restarts automatically and freezes up

i have a custom built pc, running windows xp sp2, intel celeron 1.4ghz (overclocked to 1.7ghz), and i can be surfing the web, checking email or whatever and the computer will restart itself. i also got another problem with the computer freezing up, it seems to only happen while im surfing the web and when it does, i cant do anything with it, control, alt, delete doesnt work, i have to press the restart button on the front of the computer case. i usually use internet explorer, but if i use mozilla firefox it doesnt seem to freeze up as much. ive done a complete format of both my hard drives and reinstalled xp and it still does this. please help.

Could be PSU.

Try another PSU and see if the problem continues. The freezing might be related to spyware/viruses. Run scanners and see what pops up.

the power supply is about 7 years old, its a dell psu, i think its around 200 watt or so.
ive ran spyware/virus and nothing comes up.

Wow, that is old. Random resets; hmmmm seems to me the power supply is going bad. Try to borrow a power supply and see if that helps. Try the computer for a day with the new power supply and check for any problems. If the problem continues, then it could be something else.

Try to reseat the RAM. I recall someone had a similar problem like yours and the solution was to reseat the RAM. Try to take out the RAM out of its slender socket and put it back in. Make sure you have your computer all updated with the latest drivers, BIOS, and also make sure everything is set in place and is secure like wires.

'Had the same problem running Windows XP. Sounds like a USB port conflict. If your printer and cable modem are both on USB ports and you have ethernet capability on your computer, try switching the from the USB cable and port to the ethernet cable and RJ-45 port. Be sure to enable the ethernet connection on your hardware manager. It fixed my problem.
