Buying a new computer and need to transfer programs and data

What is the best way to transfer all the programs, files and settings from the old computer to the new one? The both use Win XP Home and I do not want to completely replace the new disk with the old one but rather to append.

I am using Acronis and I keep all my backups on a USB hard drive. It is updated everyday.

1. Files and settings for free.

2. Programs. I wouldn't but here's something that works 98% of the time.
http://www.alohabob.com/ is notable, but some will give it a failing grade if it doesn't work 100% of the time.

In closing, some software should never be moved. Such as that old version of Adaptec, Nero CD recording software or an old antivirus.

me. I recently used it to transfer not only files and settings but also software that my wife uses for internet auctions. I found the product did all that I asked so long as I knew what I was looking for. The key is spending the time during setup, installing the software on both computers and doing the file, settings, program, etc. selection for transfer.

The nice thing was the ability to do it wirelessly which was quite fast. Alohabob does supply a USB cable with the product if you'd rather that route.

Thank you guys. I guess I will try Alohabob since the other solution does not seem to transfer programs.
