VERIZON SPEED TEST RESULT/NEW ROUTER PROBLEM??

VERIZON told me my speed was due to my computer (new iMAC) - I called my satellite service and they recommended where to go for a good speed test which I did. It was hardly pulling dial up speed - so with that info. I called Verizon and they said - oh yes I was right, then they increased my speed to 3.0 - and sent me a router-modem as they said the last one they sent us was in 2006???? I know when we went wi-fi throughout house we had bought a Linksys with NO problems - this router has to be turned off and on - so far three times in the last hour - is this nortmal????
