Please help me choose the best router for my network.

I am currently using a Linksys 54Mbps G router for my network. I want to upgrade to the best possible router for my home along with the home I have next door. If I am currently running at 2.4 with 54Mbps can I just buy the top of the line and run at 5.0 and 450Mbps? I reviewed many charts on this site for Linksys routers and ASUS routers. I hope I am understanding this wrong but according to my 2.4GHZ network I am seeing that the standard Linksys E4200 has the best range and throughput combination at 46.9 and 61.4 Mbps. Does this mean if I purchase the ASUS RT N66U is will not perfrom as well on my 2.4 GHZ network at 29.4 and 37 Mbps? Why does this not make sense to me and please correct me. If I purchase the ASUS will I be able to run at 5.0GHZ and 450 Mbps or is that something I would need to upgrade to with my ISP? I currently run about 4 laptops all purchased about 5 years ago, a new Samsung tablet, several Smartphones and a Dell desktop purchased 2 years ago. Please everyone give me their input so I can understand how to purchase the best router on the market for my network. Thank you!
