'Local only' - what have I changed?

Hi all. Amateur here with just enough knowledge to get himself into technical trouble, but not out again.
Switched to BT fibre broadband (a UK service) and wifi a week ago - all went well. My main PC - Dell Inspiron, W7 64bit - connected fine, then connected my Dell Studio (Vista Home) laptop. Both connected over wifi with no problems, and both ran for several days. This tells me there are no hardware or software incompatibilities.
Decided then to try and network the two devices which is when the problem arose. Had real difficulty getting them networked (ie to 'see' each other over the wifi network) - which still hasn't happened - but I must have changed something in my laptop settings because now it shows 'Access: Local only' when I hover my mouse over the network icon and I get no Internet access over wifi.
I then connected the laptop to the wireless hub using a patch cable and that connection to the Internet works fine. At no stage have I (knowingly) changed any fibre modem or wifi hub settings although I have tried powering the fibre hub off and on again.
I'm keen not to keep fiddling or I'll probably make matters worse, and it feels like there's just one setting needs to be tweaked. Can anyone help?
