Wireless Internet forum: multiple routers to widen wireless range

Bob, I've not tried it yet. I've got an identical router ordered, and will try it, with router #2.

So, you're saying that having multiple SSID's is better, and if all the other things (IP addresses, router connections, etc) remain identical to the primary router, this is the way to go?

I have my reason to name them different. So it makes it easy to tell which needs attention, etc. You can try it and tell us how it worked for you.

I got the second router, and configured it as I described above. The primary router is on one end of the house, in the lower level. The secondary is roughly 25 ft away, on the first level.

In my unscientific method, I took my laptop and wandered to various locations. I'd hover for several minutes in a location, then move to the next area.

Actually, this set up does a good job of reaching everywhere in the house. Only on the far extreme of the other end of the house, do I have 4 out of 5 bars. The secondary router is mounted higher (about 7 ft up) and is roughly in the center of the house.

I borrowed a third router. Not a dual band router (don't know if this makes a difference), configured it with a different IP address, disabled the DHCP, kept the same SSID and security.

This was placed near the other end of the house, on the lower level.

Now, I get 5 bars in every location. Granted, the routers are approx 25 ft apart, but two of them are on the lower level, and the signal must travel through more walls, etc.

As I said, my unscientific method says it's working, and apparenty, seamlessly.

I'm happy.

The extra neat thing is that more wifi networks mean more wifi throughput. Less congestion.

They post it over and over and the news is simple. Items that are spammed like this plus the fact the seller and maker will not answer the question mean the products must be avoided.
