Trouble connecting multiple computers with my Netgear Router

I'm subscribed to Brighthouse Networks cable internet. I'm currently using a Netgear Cable Modem Gateway (appears to be both a router and a modem) that was supplied to me when I had my cable installation from the Brighthouse tech.
I have a Dell Laptop and a Dell desktop, both of which connect to the internet fine. However, when my girlfriend attempts to use the internet on her Macbook pro, the internet often loads extremely slow or doesn't work at all even though her computer indicates that she has a full signal and connection. I've even tried directly wiring her computer to the modem with an ethernet cable but to no avail.
My dell laptop and desktop both work fine, as mentioned above but occasionally when I'm working on my dell laptop on the internet and my girlfriend is attempting to open an internet site at the same time we both experience a slow or non-functioning connection.
What can I do to get her internet better connected? Would buying a better modem/router fix the issue or should I try something else?
