ICS is a old left over from the days people wanted to share a dialup modem and a router was a rare box only used by a company. ICS tends to be rather tedious to setup but microsoft does have a couple of good examples of how to set this up on their site.

For $20 it is much easier to use a router/switch to do this.

So if I read it correctly you want to connect your desktop to the current router with a cable and then connect your laptop to your desktop.

You need 2 physical ports on your desktop to do this. You more than likely will need a crossover cable to hook between your laptop and the desktop (some can use either straight or cross). You pretty much hook one port from the desktop to the router and get that working. Then you set ICS up on the port that goes to your laptop. ICS will cause your desktop to act as a router...and of course you must define all those option to make it work. ie DNS,gateways,subnets etc etc.

If all you need is more physical ports on the router just buy a small switch and plug it into the router.
