Clarification request: Given such slim details.

You may have to reload the OS to see if there is a hardware issue. The details are so slim that I can't offer any advice other than reload.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your reply and sorry about the limited info. It's a Dell Desktop i537. It came with Windows Vista. I don't know the rest of the specs on it. The computer came with Vista and I didn't get a Windows Vista Disc with it so I don't think I'd be able to reload the OS.

Dell provides ways to create restore media

As well as a hard drive restore method.

Given so little I can't offer much yet. Dell often came with Norton or other antivirus apps that shut down the internet when they expired or even on boot up till all the protection was ready.

The lack of details hamper any specific advice but now we know that it's a dell you should take dell's instructions on creating those restore DVDs before you lose that capability.

Sorry but I'm working with so few details that I thought I'd toss out a recent fix. One owner had a few big hard drives on USB and while we're not sure why, unplugging the drives speed up the startup and cured a similar issue.

It's a shame the details are missing but I know most folk want to keep all that private.

My name is Sandeep, I work for Dell SMaC Team. I just went through your query and I would like to share few steps which you could try. This is nothing to do with Ethernet card if it is getting connected to internet on the later stage.
Firstly, I would like to let you know that there might be two things which could cause this issue.

1. Try to update the drivers. (Note: we need to know if it is Windows Vista 32bit or 64bit OS with the network adaptor name)
2. Or may be with the McAfee antivirus protection.

If the drivers have been updated and still facing the issue then I would suggest you to uninstall the McAfee and restart the system, check whether it gets connected with the internet; you can reinstall the McAfee and check again.
Check out the difference.

NOTE: BEFORE YOU UNINSTALL THE MCAFEE, DO SIGN IN TO THE MCAFEE ACCOUNT AND DOWNLOAD THE SUBCRIBTION WITH THE LICENSE KEY ON THE DESKTOP SCREEN. Without downloading the copy of McAfee do not uninstall.

If this works out then it might be a problem with the settings on McAfee which may cause the internet to get connected slowly

My Dell is a i537-3492, Vista, 64 bit with McAfee. Pardon my ignorance. But can you please tell me how I update my drivers?

To update the drivers, we need to know which network adapter is been used in your computer.
Click on start :- in start search type "Device Manager" click on Device Manager :- Click on Network Adapters :- find the name mentioned under network adapter and then search for the same on the link below.

you need to click on the drop down options to select Windows Vista - 64 bit :- click on "Network" and select the Adapter.

If you're not able find the network adaptor then, request you to email me the "SERVICE TAG and the EXPRESS SERVICE CODE" to my email id: s_srinivasamurthy@dell.com
