Wireless Internet forum: Do you use Clear Wireless Internet? I need reviews.

I live 1-2 blocks away from a tower and I am unable to watch video's or even use the internet! when I called costumer service they were unhelpful! after an hour and a half of speed test after speed test and moving the modem from one place to another I was simple hung up on.

A coworker told me about them and I signed up. I was sent the wrong device (a hub instead of a spot). I called them and they would not admit that a mistake was made. I was refunded the full amount, but decided - in spite of my reservation - to get the spot with them, even though I would need to pay $99 vs $26 for the device. A supervisor there convince me that my account with Clear would get credited the difference and that since I was already in the system, that's why I could not pay the same amount as before, but not to worry since I would not get charge for a few months thanks to the difference. I received a refurbish device and was ok with that since I would not have to pay for well over two months. I could not be more wrong because my credit card WAS charge $34.99 the following month and no matter who I spoke to at the company, I was told, after 20 minutes on hold, that nowhere in the computer did they find anything that said that I would get credited the $68 difference. Essentially, I paid triple the amount for a used product, and at best the price for a new device for the second hand one that I actually did receive.

I ordered it and they charged me about $115.00 to get started. It took about two days to get to my house. Installed it and I was amazed at how slow the speeds were. I have'nt seen nothing that slow since the telocity dsl days of 1999.
Clear is pathetic. The same day I got it I packed it back up and sent it back to their ass. They said it's gonna take about a month before I get my full refund though. I ain't mad because I got money to blow right now.

I tried "Clear" because I thought and was told that I could use it at both of my homes... (Florida/ CT)..

First off the internet wasn't as fast as expected.

Secondly, it didn't work in Florida. The coverage map seems to have changed. It did work in Florida the 1st tome I tried it but then it stopped.

Also in CT the wifi seemed to not stay connected to mobile devices if it connected at all.

While trying to end the relationship with clear I was told that my 2 yr contract was not up yet and therefore would be charged an early termination fee of $52.00... I said but you aren't delivering on your end of the deal? so they refunded me $42 dollars because I knew of exact dates when it didn't work but they still charges me the termination fee.

I would seek other options because their customer service is worse than ATT and the do not deliver the product.

I purchase Clear Internet Plug and Go service on a Prepaid basis. Started off Pre-Paid now I have an account . Instead of paying $50.00 a month for thirty days of service I am now paying $50.00 for 15 days of services. How is this service prepaid when they have done the flip flop on me. I now informed I have a due date on my account is I do not pay on the due date they grace me (And who asked them) 14 days , so now I owe for the month, the whole month. So not know this scam was happening they have established me a account so when I missed the month of October now I still thinking I am a prepaid customer Iike I signed up for. They waived a 25.00 fee for suspending my account applied my 50.00 dollars to my October bill . WOW! How is this prepaid. So in the middle of the month my internet is cut off, I am informed your due date is on the 2nd of every month we grace you 14 days. So what are you saying I have purchased your expensive equipment that was used purchase your service in which you adversitived for 50.00 a month prepaid. Pay for 30 days and get 30 days the month you do not pay no service, I was good with this agreement. Now I am paying for days I did not have service 15 days to be exact. Now they informed my I now have an account , I asked who set it up. This is not what I had at first they have been waiving fees for four month so they say. No one told me , so what are you saying, You waited for ninety days then you switch the customer prepaid service to You Plug and we **** you service. I switch from Cricket for the very same reason, I paid them 55.00 and did not received service. I never used them again. Equipment went in the dead draw. Now I have a Clear equipment to go into the dead draw. I refused to due business with a company that lie. First of all as a American I try to support my country. I have yet to get I believe a American Customer Service Rep. So you are during business in America out sourcing the call center jobs and cheating me an American at the same time. Well I would rather pay a American Company twice as much. I refused to let you rip me off. You can keep that approx. 75.00 you have cheated me out off. December 1st. 2012 I will be using Att. I hope and going to start a movement with fellow Americans in which we need to keep our money in America buy American to not use your service. Boycott Clear, Boycott Cricket a site need to be set up to pledge not to use this lousy, cheating cell phone internet company's. I live on a set income and tired to my country keep letting this company due business in America and the skirt the laws and nothing is done. My fellow Americans we need to take back our country if you are a company who cheats, low paying, out source jobs out of America but do business in America we need to put you on a do not use list. AMERICANS LETS GET THIS STARTED.

I have been using Clear Wireless Internet, off and on, for a few years. The first couple of years, I was on a contract, and I used to get really good download speeds, around 1.2MBps. SpeedTest.net used to show the speed at 10-13Mbps. When I would take the Clear Modem out of town with me on a business trip, it always worked.

Fast forward to today... I moved to a new area and my only option at this moment was to use Clear internet service until the proper cabling is installed for High Speed DSL/Broadband/etc. Clear no longer requires a contract, and I still had my old Clear modem, so I decided to sign up for the month-to-month plan.

During the first month I had no problems with the download speed, it was the same as it used to be, around 1.2 MBps. I signed up for Netflix, and after a couple of days Clear slowed my download speed from 1.2MBps to 250KBps. Clear has made it impossible for me to properly use the internet, and I do not plan on using their service after the new cabling is installed. 250KBps for $50 a month is a joke and a huge waste of money. I signed up for unlimited usage for a reason.

I have had this service for a year now and its not good if you are a online student the service keep refreshing itself and then when you call them they tell you to move the modem to all places in your house i thought i was getting a great deal on this service and i do not i have left comcast thinking that it will be better and it is not and what they do is give you a 2 year contract so that you can be stuck with them for 2 years and when you cancel your service they want you to pay $200 or more to cancel it and i dont think that is fair cause they monthly cost is cheap

I have clear service using the home modem w/ built in wi-fi , I've had strong signal out in the greater Houston Tx area, 5 bars full ( max ) , 4 at least on a bad day , no lag in XBox 360 , Netflix , or any online based application or program. It's been great thus far , easy to deal w/ not too much hastle involved. Signal and performance is greatly determined by location from what I've learned and currently experiencing seeing as how I have a buddy who lives outside of the Houston area and his signal struggles to maintain consistency .
So its gonna come down to how close to the towers you are , what city you live in , and how highly elevated you are. I live 5 stories up in my apartments and I have had not 1 single problem and it works as fast as my 175$ per month internet / cable bill .

I have used Clear for two and a half years now, in the York PA area, because Comcast angered me by trying to charge to activate their services when I moved. I swore Comcast off forever.

I live within two miles of the tower. I typically get between 5 and 10mbps down and about 1mbps up. I can watch amazon instant video in HD with no issues on my PS3. I play online games with no issues. I connect to a work desktop using Citrix with no issues. I connect into my work VPN with no issues.

Bottom line is I have never had an issue with connection speeds or been throttled. I typically use between 15-20 gigabytes of data\month. Over the timespan I've used them I have had a couple of times where it seemed that the tower was down, after a large storm for example. As far as ping times, when using speedtest I test on a server in Frederick MD which is about 50 miles away and ping times are normally around 60ms. This is pretty good IMO.

As far as equipment goes, I use a hub, and connect my own wifi router to it (Apple Airport). I have never tried using one of their hubs that have wifi built in.

I would definitely recommend Clear to someone because it has worked very well for me.

I have been working with Clear for 3 months now trying to find the cause of this slow service. My download speed is typically between .39 to 1.20 mbps. Each time I called to speak with a technician, I was kept on the phone for an hour at a time with NO IMPROVEMENTS in speed. I was always told, wait 24-48 hours and it should improve. Now they want to charge me an early termination fee!! Don't go with this company, you'd be better off with DIAL UP!!

What a mess. This company has always had poor service. When I finally arranged for another provider I cancelled their service. I made a big mistake when I gave this company authority to bill my credit card. I have cancellation confirmation dated October 18, 2012 and just received a notice that CLEAR has billed my credit card another $110.00 on January 1, 2013. My calls to CLEAR have not gained any satisfaction. I am now trying to work with the bank to get them to deny the charges and to stop the authorization. Now I am spending my time to try to get this billing stopped.

I read a lot of complaints but I have to say my clear account works perfectly. I get a constant download speed
of 2 mbps per second which is not cable modem speed it does the job fine. Does just fine for browsing. I have the cheaper plan for 35 a month . The 50 a month should be faster.
Of course if your are going to be downloading movies consistently cable modem is better.
All these people that are complaining must live in weak zones. If it doesnt work for you thats fine but it will work for some depending on your location.
If you are thinking about using clear give it a try. I fit doesnt work in your area just return it.
If you get a laptop with wi max built in you wont even need an adapter.

I just started (Jan 2013) with the Clear and am very pleased. After my land line carrier failed to provide support when my internet went down (bad modem) I looked around for something that would provide phone and internet and not cost an arm and a leg. I did not want TV. The best deal was Clear 39.99 for 40 Gig a month. I have had the Clear Hub Express for a week or so and started at about 1Mbps up and down. I was getting 3 or 4 lights. I went on the Clear web site found the nearest tower location moved my hub 4 feet and 1 foot up and changed it direction. I now get 4+ Mbps down and 1.7 Mbps up with 4 to 5 lights lit. It is consistent. The hub can accept an external antenna which I was thinking about but no more. Folks who mentioned poor signal quality may want to consider an external antenna. In a couple of days I will receive my adapter from PhonePower.com so I can transfer my phone to VOIP. that will be the key. For about 10.50 a month I can convert to VOIP and use my current cordless phone plus get 911 plus all the features I need plus 1 hr of international calling a month. PhonePower said they need about 128Kbps so I have plenty of bandwidth to spare. I spend some time in FL. Clear provides coverage there so I can take my phone and internet with me instead of trying to set up service for just a few weeks. Hope this helps you see another perspective from a very satisfied customer.

Just moved into an older home that never had cable ran to it from the road (driveway is about 300 feet). I am also not a huge fan of AT&T/Deathstar so I did not want DSL. A friend suggested Clear, so I started to do a little research & despite some of the negative energy out there I decided to give Clear a shot. I purchased the Clear Hub Express/Router for $50 from a Clear dealer in Norcross and signed up for the unlimited plan for $49.95. I am not a HUGE demand user but I do stream NetFlix and Amazon video a few times a week. Streaming works fine and I have yet to have an issue. About 3 times a week I will also do a speedtest(speedtest.net) and I consistently get 8-12MBpS down and about 1MBpS up. I am VERY happy with the service. I love the fact that EVERYTHING is wireless (the service & the router). After using the service and being very surprised with the speed my guess is that most of the negative reviews out there are mostly mobile users as well as users that are using the service for malicious files/torrents and such.

For the Altanta locals: I live out near Stone Mountain in the Smoke Rise area and again the service is GREAT!

I recently ditched Comcast and Clear was the only other option, at first could only get a couple of bars and about 3mbps (still faster then was getting from Comcast basic) but moved the modem near a wall an near the ceiling of first floor and now we get up to 13 Mbps (usually during peak we are at 5-7 range). It is all about where you put the modem, we also had it near microwave and every time it would turn on it would drop out. So do not put it near anything electronic. Now we stream 2 tv's at a time and have 4 computers and it perfectly adequate. Will never have Comcast again. I am in the Fort Lauderdale Area. Hope this helps

I'm so disgusted I'm posting again.
1 - Service is great where I live. Also used it at my business until we moved out of range.
Back office support is non-existent.
2 - Clear turns off my service every month instead of using auto pay that I set up. So I have to call and pay on-line and then they take out payment twice.
3 - Each time I've tried to get a refund, they happily refund the overpaymend and then take the payment back out again in a few days - with no notice.
4 - At my business, they turned off my service on the payment due date every 3 - 4 months. As I also had Clear phone, this disrupted my business until I could convince them to turn back on.
5 - If these guys can't run a business any better than this, the market needs to let them fail.

I was going to order service today. They charged my card then told me they would be sending out a refurbished device. They told me this after they charged my card. I said no. Why would I buy a used device? That's when the headache started.

I was then transferred to a "supervisor" I had an arrogant young man explain things to me. I then asked why was the previous person sent a new device? Who are these people who get new devices and why am I not one of them. I stopped the order and said no thank you. I was told it was too late I already bought it. I was given the number to customer service.

I was again held up by someone basically refusing to refund the charges. I had to become slightly aggressive. It was then that I was told my account would be credited 52.00. They charged 84.00 and change. They said I would not get the rest until I returned the equipment. WHAT EQUIPMENT! I stopped the order within the same phone call. I then called my bank. Now I have to wait and see what they charge and dispute it. Horrible experience.

Please save yourself the aggravation I am currently enduring.

It would be difficult to think of a worse overall experience. I was directed to Clear when I signed up for Direct TV. I asked very straight forward questions citing my usage. I like to stream music, download video both for my computers and for the kids using Netflix on the Wii, and play games online. I am not a hardcore gamer and do not use special equipment like gaming rigs or insanely fast internet. Also the folks at Direct TV had talked me into the cinema package, the equivalent of Comcast or Verizon's on demand service, basically allowing one to pay per view or download some free content. Mind you that I was transferred to Clear directly from Direct TV. This is important to note because when the installation guy showed up and asked to see my modem to hook up this service he refused once he saw the Clear modem. They know how slow the service is and will not hook it up because of this. Why then would they recommend it????? But I digress....

The clear sales guy, in response to my questions about video and gaming told me that my experience would be similar to the fios I had and better than Comcast. He said it was perfect for all these things I did and went on and on. The truth is I find it bad for general surfing much less downloading anything. During off-peak hours, and with the modem moved into the sweet spot, it is just slower than any other service I have had. During the time that most people use it it is almost unusable. As I type this my children are trying to watch a 20 minute curious George and the program has stopped to load at least 4 times. I can literally download and watch video on my 3g cell phone faster than on this service.

It would still be terrible service if the sales guy had not told so many bold faced lies, Needless to say customer support is terrible, mainly because they know that they can not fix something that will never be good. Stay away from this company. The service is bad and they are dishonest.

I have not had the horror story that some here have had but I can say that the service I've had with Clear has not been good. I signed up for it about 2 1/2 yrs ago and for most of that time it was sort of half assed service. Only about half the speed that they told me it would be when I signed up but I didn't have a lot of choices so I stayed with them.

About 3 weeks ago we had a really bad ice storm and I lost service for 3 days. When I called they said the tower nearest me was damaged and they were fixing it. When it finally came back online it has been ridiculously slow with frequent outages. I haven't had internet this slow since dial up.

When I call Clear tech support they tell me that the tower is operating normally and there must be something between me and the tower that wasn't there before. I live less than 1 mile from the tower and the only thing between me and it are the same houses and trees that have been there for the whole time I've had service.

Clear seems to have no interest in correcting the situation but luckily a new service is now available and I'm done with Clear.

If you have bought from a website that is internet.clear.com, it is a TOTALLY different website than clear.com. I was also about to buy from internet.clear.com but luckly I remembered an article where it told you that these kinds of websites were different than the normal one. So if you bought from internet.clear.com, chances are you have the worst internet and if you bought from clear.com, its good internet like the one my grandfather uses.

Service is absolutely pathetic, both the internet service and the customer service.
Internet been down for over 2 weeks now, after a dozen calls and several emails I have finally had a response to say they can attempt to fix it in a weeks time.....
Service drops out on a regular basis, IT IS MEANT TO BE FIBRE OPTIC,STATE OF THE ART!
Do yourself a favour and find an alternative, the Manager Karina would be the worst of them all, does not return calls or emails, refuses to offer any sort of resolution.
Now waiting another week without internet so they can "attempt" a fix....

Clear stole four hundred dollars of our money. We never got to use its "service" at all. Clear will make you jump through hoops for an hour in its gatekeeper voicemail, then fail to help with unintelligible foreign slaves. NEVER patronize Clear!!!!!

I tried Clear wireless internet and phone a year ago. I live one block north of Wilshire Blvd. in a very dense area of the city. Their map showed I was in the best area with a Bright Green on their coverage map. When I got the "modem", I connected it and had all 5 green LED's light up showing "best signal" reception.

First I had problems with the phone connecter box they sent. I had dial tone and could dial out, but could not get incoming calls to ring. They sent me a new phone box that did work, so phone was fine.

However as far as internet, it was WORSE than Dial Up. I tried to "Ping" their own mail server (POP and SMTP), it just hung, and hung and hung. It was well over 2,000 MS. I hadn't disconnected my cable internet yet, so I tried the same "Ping" over my cable internet, again to the Clear mail servers. Over the cable internet connection to clear mail server the Ping time was only about 43 MS.

I TRIED to get help from Clears' DISGUSTING (lack of) "customer service". I'd rather have a root canal done than deal with them (many IDIOTS who didn't know technology at all). I got a "supervisor" who wasn't much better. Since I could see on their "coverage map" where the towers were located, I asked what network they were using, and if it was their own. Of course I got the non-sense answer that it is "propriety" and they wouldn't tell me.

I tried asking how I could get a "Ping" reply over my cable carrier to Clears' own mail server in 42 MS, but over Clears' own network it pretty much never completed in over 2000 MS. Of course NO HELP.

I got RID of Clear in less than a month, and thank goodness I had not yet had my cable internet turned off. With Clear I would have been "stuck in the dark".

It is very unfortunate that Clear is the first Retail WIMAX in my area, and as far as I know, the first Retail WIMAX internet provider in the country. With such a horrible "roll-out", I suspect that many who tried it with Clear will never look at WIMAX again when other companies eventually roll it out.

I definitely wish the FCC had done a better job of determining who was ACTUALL CAPABLE of providing Decent, Good, WIMAX service, BEFORE allowing the license to Clear.

Don't WASTE your TIME or MONEY with Clear. In my opinion, living in a major city, in a dense area, one block from likely the largest street in all of California - Wilshire Blvd, Clear is NOT Clear and is CRAP to be tossed out or tossed in the garbage, since that is what they deliver for service and non-existent "customer service" i.e. garbage.

AVOID yourself the WASTED Time & WASTED MONEY with Clear!!!

I am on the very edge of my AT&T CO footprint and the best their DSL was getting me was 775KPS. And I was not going to muck about with Charter. In '11 Clear had a 30 day free trial so I gave it a shot. I'm not going to lie, the guys at the kiosk at the mall were dunces. "What kind of speeds kind I expect?" "Oh, it's *real* fast... T1, T2 speeds..." T2 speeds? Anyway, took it home and set it up. Two years later and I'm still very satisfied. $45/month is getting me 8-12MBS. I have never had an outage. I have never been throttled (see above) or capped (I use about 45-50GB a month). So as you can imagine I'm always perplexed when I read the hate for Clear.
