Is it safe to use a VPN when visiting a bank website?

Is it safe to use a VPN if you are going to sign in to your bank account online, or paypal or any other site in which you have money?
Can the people from the VPN company copy your username and password and steal money from you?

But for those that want absolutely no way, they'll never use online banking and head to the bank.
