Wireless Laptop vs. Desktop Connection Speed Difference?

In my home I have a desktop computer and a wireless laptop computer with a belkin router. I have a basic level DSL connection. It seems like in the last few weeks my Laptop speed has dropped a lot. I checked the connection speed on my Laptop with the CNet online test and it is 854. Should the internet connection speed be similar for my desktop computer and my Laptop?
I have checked my laptop for all the usual issues that would cause it to slow down.

It is advisable check the PC performance if its both desktop and laptop are HARD WIRED to the modem or router.

run www.speedtest.net and see the difference.

www.speedtest.net not only gauge the internet connection but also computer performance.

and also it depends on the PC specifications.

A lot of things affect wireless connectivity such as EMIs, proximity, etc

also check for viruses, start up programs configuration etc.

And what is the connection speed at your desktop (at approximately the same time)? And did that drop a lot also?

"Speed" in itself says nothing. There are so many different things that can be slower or faster. In fact, the connection speed tends to concentrate on the speed of the connection between your modem and the ISP.

Thanks for all your great answers happy

My Desktop speed is actually 1240 vs the 854 on my wireless Laptop.

What is interesting is that when I test the Desktop with the CNet connection speed test the 1240 speed shows up in the small dial but it will NOT complete the test download in time for anything to be shown in the large dial. Afterwards it just keeps telling me to "try again--- test could not be completed."

Am I correct in thinking that this problem may be just network congestion and the one meg for the CNet test cannot download in the time allotted for completion?? If so, then I may give my ISP a call...because i have sneaky suspicion that they have lowered my connection speed or that they need more equipment to handle the load.

Sounds like what I would get on 768K DSL.

I've seen folk test and test and test. But nothing seems wrong with these numbers. If one machine or another buffers then it causes bounces in the numbers.
