WiFi Signal Strength Excellent - Slow Speed

I have had a Linksys Wireless Router for a couple of years in my office. My laptop in the living room always got around 10mbps download speed. I also use 2 Linksys Gaming Adapters (one upstairs and one downstairs) for my PS3, HD-DVR's, Wii, TV, Roku, etc. to connect to. They always got a good speed (upstairs and downstairs).

Nothing has changed in my house and for the past month my speed has gone from 10mbps to 0.5-1.5mbps on my laptop and other devices. My laptop has shows Excellent Signal Strength (all 5 bars filled) but has a really slow download speed. The Gaming Adapters show a slow speed as well.

I thought it might be the Router and have been using the Verizon Modem/Router as a bridge. I removed the Linksys Router and now use the Verizon one only. It did not improve my speed.

If I take my laptop in the office my download speed is around 11-12mbps. The office is only about 25 feet away from my laptop. The Gaming Adapter is only about 18 feet away.


What can I do to get better speeds?

There is difference between signal strength and signal quality. You can have a very strong signal but be getting huge number of errors because of interference. There are some wireless cards that display both strength and quality or error rates.

No easy way to fix this. Standard change the channel and see if its better. Many things can cause interference. You would have to think if you had any new devices in your house lately that use wireless. You could also turn off all but one of your devices and test. You may have some new software sending junk out. Of course it could just be a new router at a neighbors house on the same channel.
