using dd-wrt, will my internet connection hang or be slow?

I am using a dd-wrt router driver on my Netgear WGR614 v.8 router and it is set up as a repeater bridge. There is a separate router downstairs that is being used under different security settings. My access point and repeater bridge use WPA2-personal and AES security configuration and the downstairs router uses WPA-personal and TKIS security configuration. Are the different security settings going to cause my internet connection to hang or be slow? Right now, I am getting internet just fine most of the time, wired to the repeater bridge, but some times it slows or stops completely. Could this be due to the fact that I use Comcast internet, since they don't give users a dedicated line? Or is it possible that the different security configurations are conflicting with each other? One other thing- dd-wrt's website states in their instructions tells me to use the same channel for the repeater bridge and access point. Will it still work if I change the channel on one of the routers in the repeater bridge set up? What if I changed the channel for both the access point and the repeater bridge routers, as long as I use the same channel? I asked these questions at the dd-wrt forum but got no response.
