Wireless Router N vs G for Nintendo Wii Compatibility

Let me preface this question with admitting I know very little about techie stuff, but I'm trying to learn. Talk to me like a beginner.

I use my wireless router for my laptop, iPod, iPad, and Wii. I used to have a decent "N" router, but when I got my Wii, it wouldn't work with the "N" router so I had to get a "G" router. I've been experiencing a lot of lag lately and slow connection doing simple things like surfing the web, watching Netflix, etc. I'm thinking of upgrading my internet service, but wanted to make sure my router wasn't what was holding me back. I've done a little digging online, and from what I can tell, "N" routers are superior to "G" routers for many reasons (most of which I can't comprehend; I assume they are faster among other things).

So I have 2 basic questions:

1) are N routers faster than G routers?
2) is there a fast N router out there that is compatible with the Wii?

I greatly appreciate any feedback you guys have. Thanks!!

- G routers support a maximum speed of 54 mbps (mega bits per second) in your LAN
- N routers are at least twice as fast (up to 248 mpbs on your LAN)

And/but:
- your internet connection is so much slower than your router speed, that you won't see a difference using the internet
- N routers should work with G-devices. It's not clear why yours didn't.

1) Yes N routers are faster than G routers.
2) Yes, most N routers are compatible with the Wii.

The thing to think about is that the N router works best when only in N mode. The problem with this is that some devices (like the Wii) do not have N capability so if the router is set to work in N mode instead of a mixed mode, the Wii (or any device with a G adapter) will not see it. Also, sometimes N routers are set to work in a higher frequency range (5ghz instead of 2.5ghz) and this could also prevent devices like the Wii from connecting to the N router.

So the answer to the question of why would set a router to N mode only is speed. If the router is set to mixed mode and you add a slower G device (Wii) to the network, it basically forces all wireless traffic to communicate at the slower (54mbps).
