Network icon needs clicking to choose the network.

I changed my router as it was becoming unreliable.
I use my MacBook 2.2, OS 10.4.11, Safari 4.1.2, with new router Huawei Echolife HG521. My previous router was the same make though a different model(HG520b).
Every time I switch on my MacBook it requires me to click on the icon to select my network(out of half a dozen) for which I have put in the password. It works fine after that.
It was not the case before the change of the router. I used to open my MacBook and the network would come on without any clicking.I would have my selected web page open in front of me.
I have locked the network ,if indeed that lock is for the purpose I think it is. It has not solved the problem. I am sure I need to do something else to get back to the position I was in,before the change of the router.
Please help. Thank you.
