sometimes WiFi works and sometimes it doesn't - why?

I installed WiFi in my home months ago with a Belkin wireless router. The router is upstairs and the laptop is downstairs. There's only about 10' between them (if you go directly through the floor). When I do have a connection the speed is good.
Why is it that sometimes it can't find the WiFi? Message says "WiFi is unplugged". Is there anything I can do? I use this for work and it's driving me nuts. I do have a PC upstairs, but I'm handicapped and cannot simply go upstairs when the laptop doesn't work. I have noticed that this never happens in the morning so I'm guessing it's related to other wireless networks in my area interfering some how? I just don't get why since my router is closer to me than anyone elses would be.
The laptop runs Windows 2000. The PC that is hard wired to the router has Windows XP.
HELP would be greatly appreciated.
