Sending but not receiving packets

Hi all, thanks in advance for any help you can give. I know there are threads on this already but so far I haven't found anything that helped with my specific problem.
I have a 2005 Dell Inspiron Laptop with an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG network card. The wireless router is a Mac Airport. I have never had network connections until the past month or so.
The problem is that the internet works intermittently. I'll be using the computer and everything will be fine, and then suddenly the computer will stop receiving packets (or it will receive them VERY slowly) and the connection will slow from 54 mbps to 1 mbps, meaning of course that I can no longer use the internet.
The weird thing is, if I disable and then re-enable the wireless connection (or if I click Repair), it usually fixes the problem. The fix is only temporary, though - within a couple of minutes I have the same problem again. This is happening both on my wireless network and the one my parents have, so it's not the network. It's driving me crazy having to repair the internet connection every few minutes.
