Wireless Routers and Distance

I'm switching from DSL to cable internet service and have a couple of questions. I would appreciate any knowledge / experience that can be shared with me:
1) Are N-class wireless routers really better than G-class routers for strength of wireless signal over longer distances? I'm faced with distances (router to PC) around 80-100 feet and up or down a floor level.
2) The cable company wants to install their modem in a basement utility room, but I would prefer the wireless router be near my primary computer (more central location in house for better wireless coverage). This would mean a run of about 80 feet of ethernet cable. Does distance affect ethernet cable selection (ie, do I use Cat 5e or Cat 6)? Will a 100-ft cable cause any signal degradation over a 75-ft cable?
Thanks,
