incredibly slow wireless internet! help!!

hello! something is wrong with my internet i think.. its really SLOW and always has very low signals. (My router is currently downstairs while my room is upstairs)i just bought a d-link Xtreme N DWA-552 adapter for $75.00 thinking it would be goood. but its horrible!.. i think im doing something wrongg. whats weird about this is that i also have a laptop and when i bring it in here..its FINE! signals vary from very good-excellent!?! but when im on my desktop..its like low-very low. whats wrong with what im doing?

also my router is different company than my adapter.

N and wireless in general

If using N generation wireless it is still better to select hardware from the same manufacturer due to compatibility issues.

However, as you seem to have had problems before adopting N I think the issue is probably one of reception or interference.

Try using different channels as the different frequencies these represent work better or worse in different environments.

If you can detect neighbouring wifi network try a channel five stops from strongest neighbour.

Relocate cordless phone base, video sender etc away from computer or router.

Try upgrading the firmware of the router. That's how I fix my problems with the Linksys.
