I can connect to internet without cable modem wtf?

So all I have is an ethernet cable from the wall plugged into the
netgear wgt624v3 wirelss router.
I have a laptop that has wifi so it gets instant perfect internet connection from this router.

Whether or not this situation above is normal without a modem, my question is this.
I have a desktop that needs to be connected to the internet.
should I buy a wireless network adaptor for this desktop or a cable modem?

I'm guessing I should buy a cable modem because that makes more sense, but if this situation with the laptop will work with the desktop as well,
I don't see why I shouldn't just buy a cheap PCI card so that the desktop
connects great wirelessly to this network as well.

Why is my laptop working without a modem anyways, does anyone know?

Sounds like the router is already plugged into a modem somewhere.

There are two choices for broadband. Cable and DSL. Neither of which feed from an Ethernet cable.

Well, unless they stuck a modem in the wall, I don't see a modem anywhere.

Ok, maybe it's not an ethernet cable but I'm just talking about a cable everyone uses to insert into the wall jack for internet (that little rectangular white plastic covering on the top on a long grey cable)

This is what's in my room. This cable coming out of the wall jack and
into the wireless router. That's it.
My laptop gets perfect internet ....

there has to be a modem or router. Your room is where? Dorm?

Count the pins on the cable. 8 = Ethernet. Ethernet = modem or router ahead of you. No other option.

Hmmm seems odd, very odd must either be a modem somewhere. There is only an ethernet hook up right from the wall? Is this a house? Apartment?Office? Unless maybe you are getting fooled and are reading another signal nearby, am curious need more info.

THis is an apartment complex.
I heard that there's some special routers that use DSL that don't require a modem but all I have is Netgear WGT624v3.
We don't have a home phone.
Only an ethernet hook up from the wall, yes.
Nope, this is not another signal. My last name is Bu-Yang and that's
what shows up on wireless network when I try to connect from my
WIFI laptop. WEP key is as I input it when I configured my router.
Wait, how can there be a modem behind the wall? I don't think some
construction guy decided he was clever and put a freakin modem
behind a wall just to be cool you know. lol
