Do i really need to upgrade my router??

This is going to seem like an odd question, but ive been looking around the internet and havnt been able to find an answer.
I have an older router a D-link DI-624 with clock speeds around 44.4 Mbps as a max throughspeed. and i was looking at some of the newer routers available like the D-link DIR-655 with speeds around 112.56 Mbps, and thought that sounds great for the home as I have 2 laptops and the desktop on the router.
What has my wondering is that my internet speed witch is pretty good at 4.9 Mpbs faster then some T1 lines wouldnt even come close to using the speed that my current router can handle. and even the insane T3 lines only get up to at most 16Mbps.
So my question is, is the extra speed the routers have wasted? and if so why bother trying to upgrade the routers?
