Wireless from my boat

I live on a sailboat. In the summer, at a mooring at a club; winter, at a marina slip. The club broadcasts a signal out across the mooring field for it's members. Sometimes I can connect my 1 yr old HP laptop running XP to the internet and sometimes not. Usually, it's better on deck than below, but I want to work at my desk below. Is there a way to mount an 'antenna' on the mast and improve the connection?
