my laptop can't connect with my router.

I have a desktop with XP and a new wireless G router connected to that and DSL modem. It works fine, I can connect to internet with it. However, my laptop running Win 2000 with a networking card/b does not find the router. Since this is a new "old" laptop for me (was used in business office), I am totally ignorant on configuring it so it will connect with router. I have an icon on tray that is x'd outand it says local area network connection unplugged. I have 2 icons in control panel that say Wireless Link and Wirelss Network. the wirelss network icon has add/edit config. profile with default on one column and access point on the other. The network card works according to device manager. What can I do to get it to work? do I need some kind of ip address somewhere typed in? I am Clueless!! Thanks.
