What is the best / newest external dial-up modems out there?

2 questions I need answers to ASAP Please.

1. In researching for a new ext. modem I'm wondering what or if there's a difference between Interfaces mainly: PCI-bus vs. RS-232. Does it matter?

2. I currently am using an outdated Robotics Ext. Fax Modem. A Sportster 6-7 yr old. Time for a new one and I need an answer quick, fast and in a hurry, please. Which modems do you get the best bang for the buck? I've only ever used Robotics and was wondering what else may be out there that's newer, or better? What the choices. I saw a USR5686E which has that interface of RS-232, but I don't know what that means? Will it work with any computer? HELP???

USB or Serial port models

Those are the common ext. modems available. Unless you install an internal modem, I just can't reall ever seeing a PCI modem as ext. type. Buy one of the namebrands and you'll do fine. Keep using USR or as I do a Zoom ext. model. Nope, its been with me for years too. I do suggest, if you shop around don't buy cheap. The cost of a namebrand is only a few $ more and generally offer good service, though you may find USB models cheaper overall. Your old USR was probably serial, replace with another serial and it will after properly installed, offer good service. That's it...

How do we know what will work?

RS-232 = serial

USB = USB

Do you have a USB port?

Regardless of the type of external, your dial-up speed is determined by your telephone cable pair and not the modem.

As dial-up standards are the same for everyone, the consideration comes to cost.

Why must you have an external? Internal are just as good, if not better and do not take up any desk space. Then again, if you don't have an available PCI slot. . .
