internet unreliable

by sup3r_b0wlz - 2/11/13 7:40 PM

Hi all
so about two months ago we decided to change from our good, reliable, but slow ISP (nextera connections, wireless 1mb/s up and down, constant, garenteed. Went down once because they had a power surge or something.) to a new cable company, Baldwin telecom (local cable company, 3mb/s down .5 up I believe) well after a few days we noticed it was going down a lot. And itd go down like every couple hours, or less for 1 minute or 20 minutes, so we called and complained and after a few days of them trying stuff, like plugging computer right into modem they assigned us another ip address I think (I think static but they also said it normally doesn't change anyways) and it was good for at least a week. Maybe two. But then it started again. But now it seems like its out fro more like days at a time. Maybe more lime blocks of 5 hrs but still. Its just not acceptable. I have hmwk to do. My dad has a business to run etc... I can't play roulette wondering if the internet will work.

so I'm asking foe help on trouble shooting this because its a hell of a lot cheaper then our old internet and my dad doesn't want to go back.

here are some steps I have taken that haven't worked
•power cycle full network
•ping my default gateway (not my router but what my router says is my default gateway, and it usually works but just did it and it didnt.)
• ping anything else (guess if I can't ping gateway I can't ping anything else. But before when I could I couldn't ping my dns or anything.)
•reseting routers
•probly some other things.

so ya if anyone has any ideas for things to try please let me know. I'm frustrated and wanna get this fixed!
