How to slow down Internet Speed??

I have verizon fios and it is just to fast for me. How do I make it slower? I have max right now 54mbps and I connect through a router to another computer.

WAG. Some of the old telephone wiring and some previous models of ADSL modems and routers are not able to cope... and they stopped working... happy
