Should I switch to Broadband ?

I am considering switching from DSL to Broadband, the problem I am running into is when I contact the broadband provider and tell the that we have five PC's and a notebook they tell me that I will need to purchase about $300.00 worth of hardware from them and that I would incur additional monthly charges. I am at best barely computer literate so could someone give me some guidance on this it just does not sound right to me. Thank you for any help you may have.

Price may be right, but not from them, and they do NOT need to know what you are connecting. What you will need is:

Cable modem
Router
NIC, wired or wireless for each PC.

A standard wired router will have four wired ports. A standard wireless router will have four wired ports and up to 256 channels/ports for wireless.

Make sure the cable modem is DocSys 2.0 compliant, they're available everywhere. I have a D-link DCM-202. My router is the Linksys WRT350N. Excellent.

Back to their statement. They're there to make money so they want you to buy from them. Your choice.

True fact. About a year ago i was having trouble staying connected. My modem would show disconnect. I called them and they tried to ping my modem and it failed. The tech said, "Do you have a router?" I said yes. Point being, they could not see my router. Turns out they had cable damage and they fixed it.

Get your own router and the proper NICs, wired or wireless and put it together.

if you need help deciding what kind of service best suits your need check out this site: http://oc3blowout.com. I switched with them recently and I have had no problems. They are cheap and reliable. They have a lot of different services to choose from.

I have Comcast and get between 6.5 and 7 Mb/s download speed with their standard basic offering. Beats DSL.
