Problem with AOL DSL drivers after installing USB hub

I'm trying to help out a friend who is having problems with his UK AOL broadband modem connections. If the AOL supplied software is installed (including the drivers for the DSL modem), the system works fine initially. However, if a USB hub is installed to provide additional ports for a printer and scanner, the DSL modem is then not recognised when the PC is turned off and then on. Reloading the AOL drivers then restores the DSL drivers and the system works again, even if the hub is still connected. The hub is connected to a different USB port to the DSL modem. Has anyone any ideas as to how fitting a USB hub on one port might cause the PC to forget the DSL modem on the other?
